Why aren't video games scary any more – am I just old and jaded? Dominik Diamond

The Guardian

My wife and kids have a tough time believing that I fear nothing supernatural. They fear all of them. When they tell me that this is strange, considering I'm the only one of us who goes to mass every Sunday and literally eats the body and blood of a man who came back from the dead, I distract them by showing them my latest Day-Glo Virgin Mary statue which plays Ave Maria. My youngest teen, Sharkie, gives me a list of her scariest games ever. Apparently one of them is bound to give me nightmares.

TAG: Toward Accurate Social Media Content Tagging with a Concept Graph

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Although conceptualization has been widely studied in semantics and knowledge representation, it is still challenging to find the most accurate concept phrases to characterize the main idea of a text snippet on the fast-growing social media. This is partly attributed to the fact that most knowledge bases contain general terms of the world, such as trees and cars, which do not have the defining power or are not interesting enough to social media app users. Another reason is that the intricacy of natural language allows the use of tense, negation and grammar to change the logic or emphasis of language, thus conveying completely different meanings. In this paper, we present TAG, a high-quality concept matching dataset consisting of 10,000 labeled pairs of fine-grained concepts and web-styled natural language sentences, mined from the open-domain social media. The concepts we consider represent the trending interests of online users. Associated with TAG is a concept graph of these fine-grained concepts and entities to provide the structural context information. We evaluate a wide range of popular neural text matching models as well as pre-trained language models on TAG, and point out their insufficiency to tag social media content with the most appropriate concept. We further propose a novel graph-graph matching method that demonstrates superior abstraction and generalization performance by better utilizing both the structural context in the concept graph and logic interactions between semantic units in the sentence via syntactic dependency parsing. We open-source both the TAG dataset and the proposed methods to facilitate further research.

Resident Evil Village: All about Lady Dimitrescu, new characters and the franchise's 25th anniversary on release date

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

On Friday, Capcom released "Resident Evil Village," the eighth flagship title as the franchise celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. The original Resident Evil launched in March 1996 for the first PlayStation video game console, then eventually released on other platforms including PCs and the Sega Saturn. The franchise helped pioneer the genre "survival horror," where players encounter powerful zombies and other supernatural creatures, using limited resources and their wits to escape. It has also branched out to the big screen, generating several films starring Milla Jovovich. In Village, players assume the role of Ethan Winters, the main character from 2017's "Resident Evil 7: Biohazard."

Here Are the 10 Best PlayStation 4 Games to Play Right Now

TIME - Tech

The PlayStation 4 has dominated the video game market since its release six years ago. Sure, Microsoft's Xbox One is more powerful than the PlayStation 4, but Sony's console spent this generation producing incredible games. Putting software above hardware has been a winning strategy for Sony and it's sold more than 100 million consoles since the PlayStation 4's release in 2013. With more than 2,300 games for the system, it can be hard to pick which game to play. But TIME has you covered.

The best games for Xbox One

Engadget

A series of missteps put Microsoft in second place before the Xbox One even came out. While it's likely to remain there until the next generation begins, there are a lot of people out there who have never experienced what the console has to offer. With the Xbox One X having a clear advantage over Sony's PlayStation 4 Pro when it comes to gaming on a 4K TV, there's never been a better time to jump in. While not all the games on this list are Xbox exclusives, every game is at least better on Xbox than PlayStation, provided you're playing on a One X. Studio MDHR's Cuphead is as beautiful as it is challenging -- and it's very beautiful. Half bullet-hell shooter, half platformer, half classic boss rush... wait that's too many halves.

The best games of 2017

Engadget

It had just turned April when we declared that 2017 was a great year for video games. The post-holiday quarter is usually fairly quiet for new releases, but in 2017 it brought us legitimate contenders for game of the year in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Horizon Zero Dawn and Persona 5 -- and that's not to mention Resident Evil 7's return to form. Now the year is almost over, and we've had a stunning Mario game, another great Wolfenstein title and even an Assassin's Creed game that exceeded all expectations. Getting an entire editorial team to agree on just one game is tough, and ultimately not that fun, so we didn't try. Instead, we each picked the one game that stood out to us the most -- avoiding duplicates -- and then named the title we're most looking forward to for 2018. I never expected that an Assassin's Creed game would end up being one of my favorite games this year. But yes, Origins really is that good. I didn't think I'd have patience for yet another massive open-world game, let alone one in a franchise that's embodied the worst elements of big-budget game development.

Here's Every Xbox One X Enhanced Game So Far

TIME - Tech

Microsoft kicked off Xbox One X preorders at the annual Gamescom convention in Cologne, Germany on Sunday. But it also took the lid off a sweeping list of current and upcoming games designed to take advantage of the souped-up Xbox One's ability to render games more fluidly and at substantially higher resolutions. The company says over 100 titles will be enhanced when the Xbox One X launches for $499 on November 7. At the moment, the tally is notably higher than 100 and includes a vast range of acclaimed already-released games, like The Witcher 3, Diablo III, Resident Evil 7, Fallout 4, Dishonored 2 and Final Fantasy XV. A few of those have yet to receive enhancements on Sony's own 4K-angled PlayStation 4 Pro, which arrived last November with far fewer enhanced games, though developers have rushed to increase the number since. The Xbox One X is doubtless benefitting both from Sony getting the 4K train rolling and its own extra year in the oven.

An Interview With 'Resident Evil 7 biohazard' Director Kōshi Nakanishi

Forbes - Tech

Kōshi Nakanishi began his career in video games on the Tenchu series at Acquire. He directed several games there, including Tenchu: Way of the Samurai and Shinobido: Way of the Ninja. He also directed What Did I Do To Deserve This, My Lord. In 2007 Nakanishi moved to Capcom and began working on the Resident Evil franchise. It was the first time he worked on a sequel, beginning with Resident Evil 5 as a game designer before being promoted halfway through that game's development cycle to direct Resident Evil Revelations on the 3DS. That game earned high marks from critics and gamers alike and led to his role as director of Resident Evil 7 biohazard.

Boss Sundar Pichai asked employees to fly back to the US ASAP. The President's executive order that bans almost all citizens from Iran, Sudan, Syria, Iraq, Libya, Somalia and Yemen from entering the country is making tech execs move fast. Google's Sundar Pichai told overseas employees to fly back to the US as soon as possible, or risk not being able to get back at all. The immigration order also saw companies like Apple and Microsoft rush to help employees stranded following the restrictions. Surgeons were able to perform a difficult eye procedure with some robotic help.
